Big Bore is the "uploader's" game in handgun metallic silhouette. To effectively "knock down" the Ram at 200 meters, it will require a load with a minimum of 550 ft-lb of energy at 200 meters. Coupled with the energy, a significant consideration is the projectiles ability to transfer its energy to the target. At times a high velocity thin jacket projectile will literally blow up on impact and transfer little energy to the target. For most projectiles there is a window of velocity in which they will perform best.
Field Pistol is the "downloader's" game of IHMSA Silhouette. The targets are much lighter than the Big Bore targets and the ranges are 1/2 as far. As can be seen from the rules, a .22LR cartridge will "knock down" a target most of the time, but not all of the time. The .22LR is a real minimum cartridge, but it can easily be seen that a cannon is not required.
